Fu Xi is the husband of N Wa and the son of Hua Hsu, a primordial being created by the death of the Titan Pangu. In the early days of mankind, humans were in a state of chaos after their creation. They did not know how to clean and prepare their food, they threw away leftovers without a mind for the future, and had no understanding of community and love. Humans looked up to Heaven in desperation, and Fu Xi took pity on them.

Fu Xi descended to the mortal realm and taught mankind how to live properly. They began fishing, hunting and domestication for their survival. Cooking and music kindled culture and enjoyment of life. Then Fu Xi created a system of writing to lay down social and moral responsibilities in the forms of laws and marriage. His doing elevated humanity above the beasts, the spark of civilization. Finally after a long life he transcended back to Heaven. As creator of the Chinese civilization, he observes the goings of his people with a stern eye -- demanding sacrifices and great deeds to remind everyone of what makes human beings different from other animals.
